A story has been developing in Iran that has so far been at the rumor level but seems to be emerging as accurate (though it is not yet fully confirmed): According to friends and neighbors of these two men, the regime has kidnapped the two main opposition leaders. Mir Hossein Mousavi and Mehdi Karroubi are said to have been taken by pro-regime Islamic Revolutionary guards to prison along with their wives.
Iran's government is denying that this has happened. The two leaders have been under house arrest for the last two weeks.
If the story is true, it constitutes an all-out crackdown by the Islamist regime in Tehran. Western governments should verify or debunk this story fast. If it is true, the effort to publicize the repression in Iran and act against the regime there should be greatly escalated.
