In "Obama Administration Recognizes Ahmadinejad as elected leader of Iran," yesterday, I wrote:
"Was this an error? Did [White House spokesman Gibbs mess up? Did the State Department get on the phones to the White House and urge some "qualification" on this statement? We will see but no hint of that yet."
Sure enough, today Gibbs corrected the statement:
"Let me correct a little bit of what I said on Tuesday. I denoted that Ahmadinejad was the elected leader of Iran. I would say that is not for me to pass judgment on. He has been inaugurated – that is a fact. Whether any election was fair, obviously the Iranian people still have questions about that and we will let them decide that."
Of course, this correction is correct. But how embarrassing that the White House messed up like this. You're in the big leagues, guys, and lives depend on what you say and do. Get it together.
The administration has only been in power now only six and a half months, but on the other hand the administration has now been in power for over six and a half months. What will it do when it faces a real crisis?
Oh, yes, and please forgive me: I told you so.
